Which got me to thinking about the tens of thousands of desperate people trying to sneak across the Canadian/US border into Detroit. Yeah, I havent seen them either. I mean, youve gotta be pretty damn desperate to want to escape TO Detroit. But, assuming you are thinking of other border crossings like Buffalo or Northern Maine, consider the situation. Canada has universal healthcare and a healthcare system infinitely superior to the pathetic excuse for healthcare we have in the US. Canada has very strict gun control laws, an extremely low crime rate relative to the US, a far better education system, less wealth inequality, a higher standard of living and according to a United Nations poll, far happier people. Now, it is true that studies show that on any given day in January and February, fully ten percent of the Canadian population is in Florida, but they dont want to STAY. Just soak up some sun for a few weeks and then hurry back to safe, clean Canada. So, about the only thing the US has going for it in a face off with Canada is warmer winters and with global warming (a big concern in Canada but unknown by Republicans in the US) the Canadian winters might soon be a little more tolerable. But while Im sitting here thinking, why do you never see a Canadian restaurant? Youve got your Mexican, French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, even Middle Eastern. But not a Canadian restaurant anywhere to be found. But then again, what would it serve? Tim Hortons? The only Canadian cuisine we hear about is the Canadian bacon that McDonalds puts on its Egg McMuffins. Note to McDonalds: in Canada that is called ham.
