Todays winter break movie outing: Into the Woods. Very good, and yet not as good as it could have been. Great casting for the most part, and some standout staging of a few numbers. (Chris Pine and Billy Magnusson doing Agony had our theater laughing out loud.) Anna Kendrick is great as Cinderella and has both the vocal and the acting chops for that part. (I was less enamored by Johnny Depps Big Bad Wolf.) I thought the last 30-40 minutes of the movie dragged a bit, though. At the risk of this saying more about me than about either movie, I preferred Moulin Rouge (to take another example of a contemporary hit movie musical). There are so many great, classic movie musicals, such as West Side Story, The Sound of Music, and Mary Poppins. This one is not in that league. But it is worth watching and very decent winter break fare. (Note of caution to friends with younger kids: I would call this a 10+ movie due to the Cinderella sub-plots containing some gory elements true to the original tale which are cut out of the Disney version, death, and two-timing. Your mileage may vary.)
