Today—12 July—in Hawaiian History [1873]: Gerrit Parmele Judd dies in Honolulu. Dr. Judd was an American physician from Paris, New York, who came to Hawaiʻi as part of the third company of missionaries in 1828. In 1839, he became a trustee of the Chiefsʻ Children School and helped oversee the education of several of Hawaiʻiʻs most important leaders. In 1842, he resigned from the American Mission and became an advisor to Mōʻī Kauikeaouli (Kamehameha III). He was a central figure in the transition of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi from absolute monarchy to a constitutional one that gained international recognition in 1843. He served as Secretary of State, Minister of Interior, Minister of Finance, as a member of the House of Nobles, and several other significant positions. In 1849, Dr. Judd was charged with guiding the royal princes Alexander Liholiho and Lota Kapuāiwa—later to take the throne as be Kamehameha IV and Kamehameha V—on a tour of the United States and Europe.
