Today—17 June—in Hawaiian History [1839]: Mōʻī Kauikeaouli (Kamehameha III) proclaims an Edict of Toleration ordering that punishment should no longer be inflicted on the adherents of Catholicism. This order began a reversal of an earlier ordinance signed on 18 December 1837 titled An Ordinance Rejecting the Catholic Religion which prohibited anyone from teaching Catholicism or any vessels from bringing Catholic teachers or missionaries to Hawaiʻi. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace—the Mother Church of Catholicism in Hawaiʻi— was dedicated on 15 August 1843. It is also the site of Saint Damien of Molokais ordination in Hawaii.
