Today’s Chronicle of Higher Ed alludes to a study done by the National Bureau of Economic Research concluding that transfer students earn less money than “direct attendee graduates.” Some of this discrepancy might be related to the change of major that occurs when students transfer. It could also indicate that a student was not comfortable at a particular college or that certain required classes were difficult to enroll in. Transfers are less likely to graduate in four years, and the extra year or two needed to graduate could put the transfer student in a disadvantageous position to compete for top job opportunities. We know that the student who takes the time to research the “best-fit” college and consider the major field of study before starting the freshman year is more likely to be successful in many different ways. - Kevin
