Today’s Gospel [22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time]: )【Jesus noticed how people at dinner were vying for the place of honor and did not feel it was so good. If He would see those of us within the Church vying like that for places of honor, how would He feel? He would certainly feel unhappy about it. He would hope that we would rather know how to be in the habit of honoring others and giving the place of honor to others; respecting, cherishing and caring for them. He would hope that we do so without having others telling us to do so against our wish: “When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not recline at table in the place of honor. A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him, and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say, ‘Give your place to this man,’ and then you would proceed with embarrassment to take the lowest place.” Jesus would hope that we know how to be humble: “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Jesus would also hope that we would know how to be generous to others and not necessarily wishing for reciprocation: “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” May God help us know how to be in the habit of being humble and generous, jointly caring for those who are in need.】(Lk 14:1, 7-14) 2013-09-01 (22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time)
