Today’s #Pillowsonavos comes from Pirkei Avot 6:5 Do not seek greatness for yourself, and do not desire honor. More than you study, do. Desire not the table of kings, for your table is greater than theirs, and your crown is greater than theirs, and faithful is your Employer to pay you the rewards of your work. The text states two phrases, “do not desire honor” and “more than you study, do.” In our text, and in most versions of the text these are two separate phrase, but the Sforno combines them as follows, “Do not desire more honor than you’ve studied.” The Sforno explains that you shouldn’t desire more respect and honor than you’ve become accustomed to based on the amount you’ve studied. Although previous lessons have discouraged chasing honor and respect, there is a certain expectation of respect that people have grown accustomed to, and being that respected is normal. It is expecting more respect and making the priority gaining more honor that is a problem.
