Today’s Safety Saturday subject is [emergency car kits] An emergency supply kit is a collection of basic items that you might need during an emergency. It’s good to involve whoever is going to use the kit, including children, in assembling it. Always keep a well-stocked emergency kit in your car. Remember to check it monthly and replace any items that become worn or damaged, and to cycle out water and non-perishable foods to ensure food safety. Make sure to include: • Water – one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for both drinking and sanitation • Non-perishable foods (like canned food) and a manual can opener – at least a three-day supply • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with alert and extra batteries for both • Flashlight and extra batteries • Flares • Jumper cables – if your vehicle has an awkwardly placed battery (such as in the rear of the engine compartment or under the back seat), make sure your jumper cables are long enough to reach another vehicle • Maps • Tools – does your vehicle use metric, imperial, or a mix of both? • A first aid kit and instructions • A fire extinguisher • Sleeping bags or blankets • Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties • One complete change of clothing and shoes per person Having a GPS can help during an emergency too, but only for as long as your vehicle or smartphone has power. Having a solar charger may help. Your kit contents will vary depending on your situation; especially if you have young children, elderly persons, or persons with special/unique needs.
