Today’s #SixDegreesNPS connection is between Fort Vancouver NHS and Yosemite National Park and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. In April 1899, soldiers from Company B of the 24th Infantry arrived at Vancouver Barracks. This marked the first time in the history of the post that a unit from one of the Army’s four African American regiments, known as Buffalo Soldiers, comprised the post’s regular garrison of troops. At Vancouver Barracks, Buffalo soldiers performed regular garrison duties, and participated in formal ceremonial activities like concerts and parades. During this time period, Buffalo Soldiers also served in national parks, which were run by the Army prior to the creation of the National Park Service in 1916. In 1899, soldiers of the 24th Infantry were also stationed at Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park, where they patrolled and worked as rangers.
