Today’s #TBT is a story of a Sailor whose hospital stay led him to become an early rock’n’roll star. In 1955, Norfolk native Gene Vincent was a patient at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He had just re-enlisted in the Navy when he injured his leg badly in a motorcycle accident, requiring a hospital stay of over a year. While recuperating in Bldg. 1, Vincent and a fellow patient wrote a song called “Be-Bop-A-Lula.” Vincent was medically discharged from the Navy and, in 1956, he and his band, the Blue Caps, recorded the song for Capitol Records. “Be-Bop-A-Lula” became a worldwide hit and launched Vincent as an early rock’n’roll star. Here’s a live performance of the song.
