Today’s Talent Tip Of The Day: Who’s Leading You? There doesn’t seem to be a day that goes by when someone contact us looking for booking or promotional events. I don’t know how many times we’ve been asked “where is the talent contest going to be?” When you look around its no wonder that people are seeking these things because it’s all they see. Talent contest across the country charging fees to enter that somehow they think that it might be the key to get into gospel music. New groups popping up everywhere seeking that magic booking agent that will take them to the next level. People all over the country lining up and paying their fees to sing at conventions in hopes that they will be discovered only to sing to the other artist who are there just like them. We see artist placing high priced ads in online magazines that have virtually no readership in hopes that the publicity will get them the success they are seeking. Promotional groups putting on their star studded events where a big name gospel artist will evaluate your talent and that somehow by rubbing elbows with a star and paying for the privilege to do so will get them noticed. Then there are the ones that will pay 4 times the amount than normal to record an album with someone just because a famous artist recorded with them also. Surely that’s the key. And of course there’s radio. You’ve got to give those big monthly fees to the radio promoters so they can get you charted and that will launch your gospel career to the stars. When the truth is there are radio promoters out there that would take their money if the song sounded like two cats fighting in a burlap bag. And then there’s facebook. You don’t have to look hard to see artist begging for friends or likes so that they will get to the top. Last but not least, there is the vote for me crowd. The ones that think they have to be voted on to succeed. Whether it’s voting on a gospel website or for an award from an obscure gospel association that’s got to be the key. What to all these things have in common? It’s the blind leading the blind. The truth is the ones that are putting these things out there and charging for them are just lining their pockets from unsuspecting naive artist who think it’s the only way to be successful. You need to know that there are two paths, the path to ministry and the path to industry. All the latter will do is leave you heartbroken and broke. Find real ministry. Who are you following? The bigger question is why are you following them? Albert Einstein said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Don’t let the blind lead you. Matthew 15:14 says “Leave them; they are blind guides. If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit. Let the spirit lead you and surround yourself with real ministry minded people. We’re here to help..
