Today’s The New York Times featured an op-ed from our friends Tim Hanstad & Roy Prosterman at Landesa – a nonprofit group, supported by ER.US, that works to secure land rights for the world’s poor. In fact, Tim & Roy joined Elizabeth in her home on Monday for a talk by Joseph Cirincione, president of Ploughshares Fund. The piece, “How the Poor Get Washed Away,” examines how the poor and landless are particularly affected by natural disasters. “Families without secure rights to land (and that is a majority of rural residents in many developing countries) often remain in their homes when it is dangerous to do so, fearing they won’t be allowed to return.” This leads to high casualty rates amongst the poorest populations. Quite a contrasting to what’s going on in England, where Parliament is discussing a “Downton Abbey Law” that would allow women to inherit titles (and the connected estates). npr.org/blogs/parallels/2014/01/15/262741340/the-downton-abbey-law-would-let-british-women-inherit-titles
