Today’s Thought Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Pv 22:6 One of the blessings, and a serious responsibility, for a parent is to teach their children the manner of life as is fitting for a child of God. We live in an age where there is a vast diversity of values among people and families. It doesn’t take long for parents to discover that, as their child comes home from school telling them what “Jimmy’s folks let him do.” Our verse today has timely advice, “initiate or instruct” a child (an infant before adolescence) in the way he should go. Not in the way that he would go, but in the way that he should go. Show them early, both their duty to parents and to their Lord. Make them aware of God’s justice, mercy, and grace. Encourage them to make use of, and appreciate the means of grace, God’s Word and sacraments. The impressions that are made in childhood don’t easily wear off. God’s ways, when taught and brought up in them, are seldom forsaken. Prayer: Thank you Lord, for Christian homes where your values are practiced by parents and taught to their children. We pray that your Word, which we learned and practiced in our childhood, would continue to be our guide in our elderly years. AMEN
