Today’s ‘Trace Closeup - Azam Farmanov, from Uzbekistan Convicted of extortion. Farmanov is a rural development activist and a regional head of the independent Human Rights Society of Uzbekistan. He defended the rights of local farmers who had accused district farming officials of malpractice, extortion, and corruption. In 2006 he was sentenced to nine years in prison.
