Today’s decision in the Trayvon Martin case is a decision that has sparked much debate and exposed many deep emotions. The reactions which are now circulating social platforms/networks, phone conversations, emails, etc. across the nation and around the globe are testaments to the expansive chasms engrained into the American landscape. Do NOT tell me that racism, prejudice, and other “-isms” which inflict harm do not exist. I’m from Mississippi! With that said, the same “-isms” in Jackson, MS are present in the most self-professed “open-minded” places. Let’s not forget Fruitvale Station, San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area Folks! I am… Shocked. Frustrated. Numb. Pissed. Sad. Conflicted. Worried. However, I am… Hopeful. In times like these, the temptation to HATE people can be intensified. Sure- we must NOT deny how we’re feeling. (I hope we will share our reactions in community.) Through it all, I urge YOU to consider this thought: LOVE is stronger than HATE. Never underestimate the power of LOVE- hatred only produces more violence.
