Today’s surprise announcement from Pierre Poilievre about significant amendments to the Unfair Elections Act is huge! Our democracy owes a debt to every single person who spoke out against this bill. In the face of a government that made it clear it wasn’t budging, so many people took action anyway, because it was the right thing to do. If you signed a petition, or two, or more, thank you. If you wrote a letter to the paper, or shared your thoughts on-line, thank you. If you attended one of our town halls, contacted an MP, or in any other way made yourself heard, thank you. When you’re concerned about something enough to act, even when it doesn’t seem like you can change the outcome, others will gain confidence to do the same. Good things can happen when people get involved. Bad things often happen because they don’t. I’m also proud of the great work NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and Democratic Reform Critic Craig Scott have done so far leading the defense of democracy in the House of Commons. Along with public engagement, robust media coverage, and expert testimony, I believe a strong and relentless opposition by the NDP has played an important role in what happened today. Make no mistake, this isn’t over yet. We’ll see what the committee actually sends back to the House, plus there are still some problems with C-23 that weren’t addressed today. That said, it’s impossible not to see this as a huge victory for every single person who spoke out against this terrible bill in whatever way they could.
