Together – Georgia Forward Steen Miles on Food Stamp Cuts: “Racism and Greed Are Killing America!” (NOVEMBER 1, 2013 – Decatur, GA) – In light of the recent federal regulations to cut food stamps, Democratic Senate candidate Steen Miles offers the following statement: The definition of appalling: uncaring congressmen quoting the Bible to justify cutting food stamps! Thanks to the most recent legislative changes, 47 million Americans are losing food benefits, which are subsidized by SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funding. This $40 billion loss in subsidies hits extremely hard the 15% of Americans who receive/need food stamps. Those affected include the poor, the disabled and seniors. What’s more, the cuts hurt school lunch programs and small business owners who run the grocery stores and receive revenue from the stamps. The consequences and the impact of this atrocity is heart wrenching, to say the least. Children cant learn when they are hungry. And what about the 900,000 veterans who are affected by these cuts? These are our men and women who have risked their lives for this country. Georgia has the second highest veteran population in the nation; 275,000 are right here in the metro Atlanta area. Not only are our veterans faced with cuts in benefits, but commissaries where they can shop for lower cost groceries are being closed. We are kicking the least of these because of unmitigated greed! Do the powers that be realize or even care that they are hurting people who make less than $15,000 a year? I know what it means to go from six figures to $16,000 (which is what the Georgia Senate salary was at the time I was in office.) But this is a moral issue. We need to create jobs that will empower people to get off subsidies. We need to increase training programs, not cut them. We need to raise the minimum wage. We need to pay women the same as men when they do the same job. We need to use technology to root out the 1% fraud in the food stamp program. We absolutely need to cease farm subsidies to wealthy farm-owning congressmen who are already making $175,000 a year or more with incredible health benefits they would deny others. Republicans talk about the dignity of work while they give more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. The middle class continues to shrink because of a lack of jobs in rebuilding infrastructures, investing in renewable energies, and incentivizing businesses to keep jobs in America. There is a real class war that benefits the rich and multi-national corporations. This is not the America we want to see. My opponent has raised $1.7 million dollars in a couple of months. You can be sure that kind of money did not come from small businesses and working and middle class people. At the end of the day – without even having to go into further detail – it’s clear to see that racism and greed are killing America. We can do better. ### FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information: Alonia Jones jonesalonia@gmail 770 256-4337
