Toilet paper is luxury for many people, let alone a box of tissue - TopicsExpress

Toilet paper is luxury for many people, let alone a box of tissue paper, in South Africa. You find that toilet paper in public toilets are chained and locked, or not provided. I used to find it a little strange that a poor household in township may have a TV and DVD set but no toilet paper. Nowadays a monthly supply of toilet paper can cost R50 and many people would rather spend it on airtime. So, what do people use for wiping their bums? Today, I took a thick telephone directory that is fast becoming redundant in our high-tech household to my friend in Khayelitsha. Thats what commonly used for a toilet business there. In my childhood in Japan, there was a small truck that came monthly to collect a pile of old newspaper from the households and gave us several rolls of unbleached toilet paper for free. I was vaguely aware that what I was using for wiping my bum used to be the newspaper that was read by 6 family members daily. Now, wouldnt that be a very good municipality service? Promote literacy and provide hygiene.
