Toileting Tuesday Stages of Development for toilet training: Awareness of bladder and bowel sensations is not present at birth. Like other areas of child development, the control of the bladder and bowel muscles develops with maturation of the nervous system and develops in gradual stages; 1. No voluntary control with frequent urination. 2. Aware of full bladder/bowel and may indicate if wet or dirty. 3. Less frequent urination due to larger bladder capacity. Begins to ‘hold on’ briefly and may indicate need to go to the toilet. Frequent accidents occur. 4. Gradually develops voluntary release of bladder and bowel motions. Able to ‘hold on’ for longer periods. 5. Voluntary release of partly full bladder, such as going to the toilet before going out. 6. Night-time control develops after daytime control.
