Tollwood Summer Festival now through July 27. Theatre, comedy, jazz and performing arts meet at Munich’s Tollwood Summer Festival. Acts from Germany and beyond perform in huge tents erected in the shadow of the city’s Olympic tower, with some 70 percent of performances free of charge. Tollwood’s motto of trying out new things has made the festival a stage for groups performing action theatre, physical theatre and nouveau cirque. And there’s something for music fans too. Well-known stars, which have included jazz outfit Orquestra Buena Vista Social Club and folk rock singer Amy Macdonald, play alongside up-and-coming talent in the Gehrlicher Musik-Arena. Between performances, the 1.5 million visitors shop for handicrafts, ceramic, clothes and jewelry at the “market of ideas,” centered on the oriental Marrakesh tent, or have a bite to eat at one of the organically certified food stands selling tasty treats from around the world.
