Tom Hanks “The Sixties” CNN The Tom Hanks’ production of “The Sixties” original series is a brave new world of reporting on an era that to this date has been under explored. The first of ten episodes, entitled Television Comes of Age, premieres on May 29, 2014. It is appropriate that a documentary segment showing the growth of TV be the first in the series. Because of the dominance of that media during the 60s and its contribution to the maturity of social awareness, television is greatly responsible for much of the political and cultural activism of that time. The accessibility of new ideas, forms of provocative humor and insightful writing, wrapped up in a multi-dimensional sensory experience, was irresistible to a now well-educated population in the 1960s. The world was changed by what The Ed Sullivan Show and Tonight Show brought into our living rooms, and by the new ideas and provocations presented to us by The Smothers Brothers and Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In shows. Think of Twilight Zone, The Carol Burnett Variety Show, Hogan’s Heroes and Route 66! Gary Goetzman (HBO’s John Adams and The Pacific) of Playtone, Emmy award-winning producer Mark Herzog (History’s Gettysburg) and Tom Hanks have produced a valuable documentary, not for just amusement or nostalgia, but toward scholarship and encouragement to future thinkers and doers. I have seen a pre-showing of this series, and it is the funniest, most illuminating, provocative and educational description of our culture that I have ever experienced.
