Tom McCartney Lisa Stockdale Face it, pit bulls are hard-wired to kill August 7, 2014 Years ago when my grandsons were quite small, my son and his wife had two border collies. During one of our visits the kids were playing when the dogs began herding them away from the street. These dogs had never seen a sheep nor had they ever been trained, but here they were looking for all the world like they were on a Scottish moor tending to the flock. Why? Because the instinct to herd was bred into them. Owners of other breeds can tell similar stories about beagles that chased the first rabbit they ever saw or retrievers that automatically leap into pools or ponds. Pit bulls also have a hard-wired instinct and that is to fight to the death. Yes, other breeds may bite when hurt or provoked but they seldom actually attack and seldom continue the assault. The mauling death of a grandmother in Middletown only proves the point. The dog continued mauling the woman even while a neighbor beat on the dog with a metal bar. This was not a guard dog or a dog trained to fight but a family pet of six years. The adage there are no bad dogs, only bad owners would not seem to apply here. Why, with so many other breeds to choose from, do people insist on keeping them? They insist that they are wonderful pets but how can they be sure. To me, keeping a pit bull would seem like keeping a souvenir hand grenade. It was said to be a dud but…. Reply · Like · October 29 at 10:58am
