Tom Smith nails it: This article got me thinking about how the recently departed Horace Silver would most likely be one of these same independent artists shown a very disingenuous door were he now just surfacing. Hear me out...we really can stop the belly aching about jazz being too obscure, intellectual or ethereal to be popular. When you get a push you sell merch. Its really that simple. On the other hand when corporatism pretends to ignore you, ...while simultaneously blocking your free venues because they insist that handpicked propaganda tools (pop stars) benefit from all viable revenue generation, ...so as to lock down your music in its comfortable high ended (albeit suspiciously edited) muzak niche, ...that in turn helps those same people expand the influence of artificial social coffee enclaves that pretend to care about you, ...that in turn help promote a MacDonalds hybrid of so called 50 year old good jazz, ...that by the way happens to have nothing to do with you, but keeps you out just in case you have any ideas of leaving the treadmill you believe keeps you solid in the eyes of your oppressors, ...who you hope one day will give you a gig at a cool interrelated downtown venue that will cost you three times more to play than what you actually receive... ...then you have a problem.
