Tom and Jerry was created in 1940. The Mammy Two Shoes character, regardless of her depiction, represents the animated inclusion of a black female character. I believe, for the purpose of film/TV history, that her inclusion and depiction are necessary. If one were to analyze the portrayals of black women in television, Tom and Jerry could serve as a historical marker. In their research, one could reference Mammy Two Shoes and her characteristics relative to a contemporary character like SCANDALs Olivia Pope. The point Im making is that roles for black women on television and in film have evolved. I might agree with disclaimers if they hadnt - to inspire change, but to cause such a stir over racial prejudices in a decades old cartoon? I disagree. If were going to add disclaimers to Tom and Jerry, then what should be done about the racist comedies made by Tyler Perry? How should we see his Madea character? What should we think of ABCs new comedy Black-ish? #MediaComment #TomAndJerry #Blackish #TylerPerry #TheLooneyTunes #SCANDAL #OliviaPope #Madea
