Tomioka Hachiman-gu Shrine’s regular festival is known as the Fukugawa Hachiman Festival, and is one of the three great festivals of Tokyo. The main event is held August 15. One of the festival’s biggest highlights is its procession of over 50 large palanquins. Also referred to as the “Water-Splashing Festival,” spectators splash the palanquin-bearers with purifying water, uniting the crowd and the bearers in a sense of camaraderie and festivity.
