Tommy Edwards was born in Richmond, Virginia, on February 17, 1922. His first success in the music business came in 1946, when Louis Jordan recorded the Edwards composition, That Chicks Too Young To Fry. Edwards got his first recording contract in 1949 with the Top label, which led to his being signed by MGM. In 1951, Edwards first recorded Its All in the Game, based on the 1912 composition Melody in A Minor (written by then-U.S. Vice President Charles Dawes). It reached #18 on the Billboard pop chart. Seven years later, Edwards re-recorded the song with a more contemporary arrangement. This time, the public responded in a huge way. The new Its All in the Game was a #1 smash on both the pop and R&B charts in the fall of 1958. It also hit #1 in England. Edwards followed up his million-seller with two more songs that hit national top fifteen, Love Is All We Need and Please Mr. Sun (another re-recording of an earlier Edwards single). His fourth and final top twenty hit, I Really Dont Want To Know, came in 1960. Tommy Edwards, 47, died of a brain aneurysm in Henrico County, Virginia, on October 22, 1969. He received a Virginia Highway Marker in 2008. That same year, Richmond mayor L. Douglas Wilder signed a proclamation declaring October 15, 2008, Tommy Edwards Day.
