Tommy Snitts, senior editor of the Huntsman’s’ Monthly, recently interviewed Nigel Willis Winkum, author of The Amazing English Foxhound. Herein is an excerpt: In the early part of the last century, Sir William Nasal Pembroke, then Governor-General of New Guinea, established the Mount Wilhelm Hounds. Unfortunately, in the winter of 1907 a raiding party of approximately two score of Dani tribesmen attacked Sir William’s country manor and kennels. Some 32 hounds were captured by the raiding party and thought to be slaughtered. Evidently, this was not the case and these hounds have flourished over the century to become excellent hunters of three order of marsupials, a staple of the native diet throughout New Guinea.
