Tomorrow, August 4 will mark the centenary of the declaration of war and the official beginning of World War I. A commemorative event will be held at St. Symphorien Cemetery near Mons, Belgium which will be attended by dignitaries of various nations. St. Symphorien is the final resting place of 229 Commonwealth and 284 German servicemen and, by sheer coincidence, the final resting place of both the first and last Commonwealth soldiers to die in The Great War. The last, John Lawrence Price, died on November 11 at 10:58am, just moments before the guns went silent. John was a Canadian, from Falmouth, Nova Scotia. Lest we forget.
