Tomorrow, I fly first to Dallas, then to Amarillo, TX, then up to Cactus, in the Texas panhandle, places where I have never traveled before. My host will be Vito Monteblanco, a former student, who has invited me to address 100 people at the County Court House on issues related to refugees, especially those working in the nearby slaughterhouses. What is a refugee? Why are they here? What did they leave? What are they coming for? How do they integrate? How are we natives to respond to them? What services do they receive? What contributions can they make to the whole society? What is the Christian attitude in these precarious times? How do they get along with each other? What are their needs? How will they change us? It should be a challenge given the current uncertainty or hostility about the stranger in our midst.
