Tomorrow (Saturday, December 27) we will be celebrating the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Shiloh National Military Park. The legislation which created Shiloh was sponsored by David B. Henderson, a ten-term Congressman from Iowa who had served in the 12th Iowa Infantry. Henderson would enlist in the 12th Iowa as a private and rose to the rank of lieutenant by Fort Donelson where he was shot in the neck. He would miss Shiloh because of this injury. During the Battle of Corinth in October 1862, Henderson lost a foot and part of his leg. Discharged due to his wounds, he would serve one more time as colonel of the 46th Iowa, a 100 day unit, in 1864. Hendersons brother, Corporal Thomas Henderson, was also a member of the 12th Iowa Infantry and was killed at Shiloh on April 6, 1862. Thomas rests in the Shiloh National Cemetery, grave #461, in the 12th Iowa plot. Join us tomorrow at 1:30 pm as we honor these men, and all who sacrificed at Shiloh, and those who created one of the most pristine Civil War battlefields protected today. There will be a small exhibit documenting the history of Shiloh park and we will have cake provided by our friends at Hardin County Tourism.
