Tomorrow could end up as one of those days when the temperature in Woodland Park is warmer than the temperatures in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. Seeing as how we always assume higher elevations are colder, this is kind of crazy! Heres whats happening: tomorrow we have a bit of that cold air that has keep Montana, the Dakotas and Minnesota in a deep freeze is going to spread into Colorado. We call this a back door cold front because this cold air is moving into the state from the northeast... (Usually with a typical cold front, well see cold air arriving as a result of counterclockwise flow around an area of low pressure. On the west side of the low, counterclockwise flow would draw colder air out of the north and bring it farther south). Anyway, think about pouring a glass of water on a table. The water spreads like a layer, and that layer is only so deep... and is thinner along the edges. Thats what were tracking here. The layer of cold air thats moving in is actually pretty shallow. So shallow, that when it spreads across Colorado it wont be able to make it up and over the mountains! So, places like Woodland Park will stay above this cold air mass... while the lower elevations bear the brunt! Crazy Colorado...
