Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. I just couldnt pass up telling this little story. One Friday during Lent a few years ago, a faithful parishioner stumbled through pouring rain right past a McDonalds and an Outback Steakhouse directly into the monastery at Mount Angel and requested shelter. He was just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish and chips he ever had. After dinner, he went into the kitchen to thank the chefs. He was met by two brothers. One brother greeted him with Hello, Im Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis. The parishioner replied Im very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best Ive ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who cooked what? Brother Michael replied, Well, Im the fish friar. The parishioner turned to the other brother and said, Then you must be . . . To which the other brother replied Yes, Im afraid Im the chip monk.
