Tomorrow is Loon Day! Held each year on the second Saturday in May, Loon Day is an open carving competition of floating decoys that pits carvers of all types of waterfowl against each other in a one division, winner take all! Theres no entry fee, and prize money is awarded to the top contestants - all entries, though, become property of the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild, but all will be auctioned off immediately after the on-the-water judging. Its a tremendous and fun fundraiser for the Guild. Entries on floated on the water simultaneously, while judges tally evaluations from the shoreline. Following the competition, theres lunch and an auction. Its not uncommon to see a nice old decoy hit the auction block, either! In addition to the competition, Loon Day organizers are asking visitors to bring a few Eldon Willis decoys for a display. The exhibit will only last for the duration of Loon Day, but itll be a great opportunity to see the large scale work of Eldon Willis and Elmer Salter all in one place. Decoys will be photographed and included in future Guild publications, as well as other works featuring North Carolina and Carteret County decoys. Admission for the event is free, and for those entering the decoy competition - remember, any floating, carved decoy of any species can be entered, but it will be auctioned off later that afternoon as a fundraiser for the Guild. For those wanting to just stop by and grab a bite and bid in the auction, donations will be taken at the door! So come out, enjoy the event, and help raise money for YOUR organization!
