Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day; What most folks call the “Boat - TopicsExpress

Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day; What most folks call the “Boat Park” in Chelsea is actually named Veteran’s Memorial Park and is located at the corner of M-52 and Sibley Road near the north end of Chelsea, Michigan. I’m not sure when the boat structure was added but my earliest memories of taking our children there include them climbing on it. Many wonderful hours were spent there watching them play, and I’m sure they recall the excitement and all the “ME’S” that were heard when we hollered; “Who wants to go to the Boat Park?” The park was built, however, in 1955 to honor veterans and there is a brick walkway with many of their names leading up to a monument. My Father-in-Law Wiley and my Dad were both veterans of WWII. They along with many of the men and women who served during that time are gone now. I think it is safe to say that the fabric of our country becomes a little more threadbare with each passing of one of the heroes or heroines of that bygone time. I’d like to honor all the more recent vets as well. Many, were, over these last sixty or so years, stationed in far flung posts such as Germany, Alaska, or even the Atlantic during the Cuban crisis. Some hazarded their lives in places like Korea, the Middle East, or those of my age who went to Vietnam. Thanks, and God bless all of you who were willing to sign your name on a piece of paper, an act which very well could have meant laying down your life for us. One last thing; I will always recall the Veteran’s Day Parades in Chelsea, seeing those brave souls in their uniforms, marching down Main Street. We were so proud when we would see them, and yet they would be so humble, saying things like; “We just did our duty son.” How I long to shake my Veteran Dad’s hand right now and thank him.
