Tomorrow is moving day! We spent this morning at the lawyers office signing away what seemed like a good portion of our lives. All I want to say is, having a good team around you (lawyer, mortgage broker, and real estate agents) is worth every penny we spent. Im still a little worried about making sure no one has to stand around on the street with their movers waiting to get into their property but theres nothing we can do about that now. The lawyer said its always a good idea to arrange for bridge financing (which we didnt do) to avoid these hassles and that the cost is well worth what you save in aggravation. There is still a lot to do to get ready: The day before the move: •Disassemble any large pieces of furniture, such as beds. Make sure you carefully pack all the screws and tools needed to put them back together again. •Pack your first-night box, which will include everything you need your first night in your new home as well as what you need the first morning. Also pack sleeping bags or move these in your car with you, as well as a box of essential kitchen items, such as the coffee pot and coffee. •Go from room to room and take care of all the last pieces you havent packed. The morning of the move: •Complete any packing in the kitchen and clean the fridge. Pack pillows and last nights bedding and any toiletries in the bathroom. •Vacuum and clean the walls as each room is emptied by your movers. •Take a picture of your hydro and gas meters so you can compare it to what the utility puts on your final bill. •Complete a final walk through to make sure nothing has been left behind. Check all closets, cupboards, shelves, etc. •Leave a bottle of something nice for the new owners. This is good karma. •Take a moment to say goodbye and take any memorial photos! In the new house: •Our lawyer suggested the first thing we should do even before the movers come in is walk through the home to make sure there is no damage and that nothing was left behind that shouldnt have been. If there is, we are to call him so he can start the process of getting it dealt with. •Post signs on each room so boxes and furniture can be sorted accordingly (bedroom 1, 2, 3, 4, so they can tell where to put boxes (which should also be marked bedroom 1, 2, 3, 4...) •Many movers wont move plants, frozen food, or pets, so make arrangements for these for transportation. Dogs should be moved to another location before the movers arrive to avoid stress. From past experience, keep cats in one room, such as the bathroom, so they cant escape during the day. Movers wont need to be in there and you can have this room emptied the night before. You dont want a freaked-out cat taking off in the middle of your move For the movers: •Have a map of your new address printed with the easiest route. •Cash for the movers tips ($20 to $25 each). •Drinks for everyone, including the movers. A friend has already let us know she will provide dinner the day we move (yeay!) and another friend is picking up the kids when school is done and bringing them to the new home. Its a big relief knowing this has already been arranged. Reni Walker (AKA Scotch Mommy on slice.ca) shares her moving mayhem on Wednesdays.
