Tomorrow is the Marine Corps Birthday. For those who are, - TopicsExpress

Tomorrow is the Marine Corps Birthday. For those who are, no explanation necessary. For those who are not, its complicated. It is a celebration of all of our successes, and there have been many. It is a celebration of our culture- unique, certainly, we have an unshakeable conviction that it is a not insignificant factor in those successes. It is an opportunity to reconnect with fellow Marines, with whom we have shared in the challenges, sacrifice, pain and pride-and occasionally the bitterness when weve fallen short. I am reminded and inspired to write today by fellow Marine James Brooks, who helped to remind me how important it is to me to remember. Every year several of us gather at the Museum to share memories- were it not for his insistence on joining from afar we might not have made it this year- Semper Fidelis. To those that have served with me, and especially those who have served under my leadership know that I am grateful for your willingness then to follow me even when I was wrong, and that I place a value on your friendship now that is beyond words. The Marine Corps birthday is also an opportunity to remember those who for whatever reason are not longer with us. Were successful, not perfect. In many instances, we have been successful only because of your sacrifice and we are grateful to you for that. You are with us today, and every day. Among us also are the family and friends of those who are no longer with us, and who have shared in those challenges, sacrifice and pain- You are as much a part of our Marine Corps as every one of us whove worn the uniform. There are some who seem to like to crow about a lack of appreciation for the contribution of our servicemembers-I am offended by that. In the years since I took my little walk on the yellow footprints the few voices of any who speak ill are drowned in a sea of appreciation, respect and even admiration. I am grateful also beyond words for this. While I did not love every minute of my time I am grateful now for all of it- given a lamp an genie opportunity I would only want to do it all over again. Devil Dogs-If that lamp ever does show up I promise that I will listen better the next time.. Happy Birthday & Semper Fidelis!
