Tomorrow is the day I have been planning for and working towards every day all year: The first day of the Fall semester at my new teaching studio. It started with poring obsessively over commercial real estate listings, first online and then touring real spaces. We almost immediately found a huge, beautiful space for an amazing price… and lost it to a higher bidder. We then toured dozens of spaces and lost 4 more to the deep-pocketed startups of San Francisco. Just when we were ready to give up, we found our perfect space… skylights, wooden exposed beams, generous floorplan, and floors just uneven enough that no startup wanted to roll their Aeron chairs on it. Then came the hard part: Moving in! A summer of installing lighting, shades, kitchenette, buying studio furniture, and thinking through every possible detail for setting up 36 individual cast stations plus a figure studio.... I drew maps of the floor plans and made long lists and Nowell managed the contractors and we both lost a LOT of sleep. By mid-July we were ready for our Opening party and the next week we started running our summer workshops in the new space. Slowly we have been breaking in the space, making sure there is tape for marking easels and hooks for hanging supplies and signage wherever it’s needed…. as of today the studio is all set up, and tomorrow the first week our regular classes begins!! sadievaleri/classes
