Tomorrow marks the 100year anniversary of Australias entry into WW1, along with Canada and new Zealand. Theyve been called the forgotten heroes of the war (and rightfully so), the horses that carried out soldiers into battle, transported supplies aswell as getting wounded from the front to the hospital. Many who served in the light horse were bushies or stockmen who took their own horses to the front with them. I dont think I could stand the thought of my old fancy hack Just crawling around Cairo with a Gyppo on his back Perhaps some English tourist out in Palestine may find My broken-hearted waler with a wooden plough behind No: I think Id better shoot him and tell a little lie: he floundered in a wombat hole and then lay down to die May be Ill get court-marshalled; but Im damned if Im inclined To go back to Australia and leave my horse behind. trooper bluegum
