Tomorrow morning approximately 1400 bicyclists will ride from Terre Haute to Richmond- 162 miles in the RAIN ride. Tonight, there are many in transit to Terre Haute to sleep unrestfully on strange beds in small hotels. There are others that will make the trek tomorrow morning to join our brethren in a quest that dates back to 1996. Many souls are pondering (and second guessing) their training, their preparation, and some tonight question their participation in such a grueling ordeal. These same thoughts entered into the minds of many bicycle travelers before us making long sojourns. We have a communal cycling awareness that the long distance journeys on bicycle occurred 125 years ago using equipment that was primitive compared to todays steeds: fixed gear non-braked Penny Farthings with large 55 inch front wheels. These bicycles traveled along wagon rutted roads and into uncertain weather. Rain fall could put a halt to any advancement for days along the unpaved roads. Conditions were harsh, and bicycle repairs were difficult to be had. Our travels tomorrow are not nearly so challenging as those before us. So we pay homage to our forefathers that believed in adventure for adventure sake on bicycles. But more proximally, we pay homage to those that have ridden RAIN, with a focus on those from Columbus. Below is a list of notable finishers from Columbus from prior RAIN rides back to the year 2000.
