Tomorrow night! Qf gallery, East Hampton Come join us for the opening QF Gallery is pleased to announce DNA and Dust, an exhibition by Heather Dewey-Hagborg and Paul Hazelton. Both artists create extraordinary works from the most minute traces of existence itself. Heather Dewey-Hagborg creates portrait sculptures from analyses of genetic material collected in public places. Working with the traces strangers unwittingly leave behind, Dewey-Hagborg calls attention to the impulse toward genetic determinism and the potential for a culture of genetic surveillance. For QF Gallery, Heather will share 3-D portraits she has created from hair, gum and cigarettes found in Penn Station and other public places in New York City, as well as more recent portraits created from samples found in East Hampton. Born into the immaculate world of his mother’s obsession: a dustless childhood, Paul Hazelton now works continuously to create something from the dust of his and other people’s everyday lives. ‘Dust,’ he explains, ‘is the stuff that connects everything together.’ It is therefore the perfect medium. Art is like dust in that it is a by-product of living - It is the product of the breakdown and fusion of ideas and materials.’ For QF Gallery, Paul is exhibiting a series of dust sculptures inside old light bulbs. The bulbs, originally made in collaboration with award-winning screenwriter and Filmmaker Hugh Stoddart for his soon to be released short film Moth Dust, will be shown for the first time. Hazelton has recently shown at Fundación Rozenblum in Argentina and has had two major works acquired by the Thomas Olbricht Foundation in Berlin. In 2012 his work was featured in Swept Away: Dust, Ashes, and Dirt in Contemporary Art and Design at Museum of Arts and Design New York. Hazelton studied Graphic Design at Kent Institute of Art and Design and holds a BA in Fine Art from Christ Church University College in Canterbury. He is a British artist who lives and works on the Isle of Thanet in Kent, England. Dewey-Hagborg is an information artist who is interested in exploring art as research and public inquiry. Traversing media ranging from algorithms to DNA, her work seeks to question fundamental assumptions underpinning perceptions of human nature, technology and the environment. Examining culture through the lens of information, she creates situations and objects embodying concepts, probes for reflection and discussion. Dewey-Hagborg has exhibited at the Poland Mediations Bienniale, Jaaga art and technology center in Bangalore, and the Monitor Digital Festival in Guadalajara, PS1 Moma, the New Museum, Eyebeam, Clocktower Gallery, 92Y Tribeca, Issue Project Room, and Splatterpool in New York City, Grounds for Sculpture in New Jersey, and CEPA Gallery in Buffalo. Heather has a BA in Information Arts from Bennington College and a Masters degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. She is currently a PhD student in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
