Tomosynthesis, also known as “3-D mammography,” is a radiographic technique that uses computer algorithms to create thin sections of breast images to eliminate overlapping tissue that can make mammograms difficult to interpret. A study comparing breast cancer screening using tomosynthesis plus digital mammography with mammography alone found that tomosynthesis was associated with a slightly increased detection rate for invasive cancer. However, radiation exposure is increased with tomosynthesis and whether the technique will lead to improved patient outcomes is not known; pending further studies, we do not advise routine use of breast tomosynthesis.
