Tonga and UNDP moves forward with MDG Acceleration Plan, launches Report On November 27, the Tonga’s Honourable Prime Minister, Lord Tu’ivakano met with the new United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNDP RC) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representative in the Pacific - Ms. Osnat Lubrani to present her credentials as new UNDP RC, after succeeding Mr. Knut Ostby in September 2013. The Visit was particularly important for Tonga, as the Government of Tonga and the UNDP launched the Tonga Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Acceleration Framework (MAF) Report on November 27, following a year-long collaboration with civil society, private sector, donors and UN agencies, demonstrating commitment to combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs – MDG target 6c). In launching the Report, the Minister for Finance and National Planning, Honourable Lisiate ‘Aloveita ‘Akolo acknowledged the collaborative effort taken by all stakeholders towards drafting the MAF Report and Action Plan. “The Government remains fully committed to the achievement of the MDGs and recognize that reducing the incidence and impact of NCDs is imperative to ensuring sustainable development of the country. We are confident that this endeavour will be successful, in collaboration with our partners, even if the journey will not be an easy one”, remarked the Finance and National Planning Minister. UNDP Resident Representative, Osnat Lubrani was pleased to announce that UNDP had recently approved a project to assist the Government of Tonga to implement its MAF Action Plan and looked forward to working with the Government and stakeholders to address reversing the incidence of NCDs and its implications on poverty and economic productivity including the negative impact it has on achieving the MDGs by 2015. “UNDP will provide support in coordinating various implementing agencies, services providers and development partners for the implementation of the Action Plan; policy advisory services relating to the prevention and treatment of NCDs; advocate for healthy lifestyles at all levels of society, and mobilize development partners and donors to address the resource gap identified in the Action Plan.” During her visit to Tonga, she hosted Donor Roundtable talks with the Government of Tonga and Development Partners at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre. The UN RC also paid a courtesy visit to Her Royal Highness, Princess Mele Siuilikutapu Kalaniuvalu Fotofili and non-government stakeholders at the Langafonua ‘a Fafine Tonga. Ms. Lubrani departed Tonga yesterday to continue her tour of the Pacific and to present her credentials to the Solomon Islands and Fiji.
