Toni has given me so many wonderful gifts - including writers Murakami, Patrick McGrath etc - but one of the very greatest has been my introduction to moviemaker Lars von Triers work - weve held our collective breath/screamed/vomited/run from the room/laughed (that we did not weep), through Dogville, Dancer in The Dark, Anti Christ, et all - we read with fascination about the new Melancholia and now Nymphomaniac 1 and 11 - due for imminent release. The new Time Magazine has a fascinating review of Nymphomaniac, so, just to whet your appetite: For a soul tormented by fears, he is an exceedingly fearless pusher of artistic boundaries. (One of the founding brothers of the radical cinematic aesthetic movement Dogme 95) He also has the support of an artistic team that worships him. Von Trier is an impish, provocative, self destructive, artistically brilliant mess. To believe in him is to be interested in accompanying him wherever his agonized spirit wanders next. Some of the artists who have accompanied him on his brutal, fascinating journey include: Nicole Kidman, Lauren Bacall, Bjork, Catherine Deneuve, Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Uma Thurman Christian Slater .....
