Tonight Brad and I and a handful of the old guard are invited guests to a 25th OGHS class reunion. Im anxious to see my kids again but self conscious and uneasy, as I am no longer the young Mrs. Henry they remember. (I even considered not going out of pure vanity.) Luckily, I do some of my best thinking while Im busy cleaning, and just now as I polished my wood floors, I experienced an epiphany of sorts. My former students are no longer the eighteen-year olds I carry in my memory. There will be no acid-dyed jeans, big shoulder pads, no heavy metal t-shirts, no asymmetrical haircuts or side ponytails. Instead, there will be people that I share a history with, men and women who have also endured adversity and embraced lifes joys. Tonight is about celebrating a community of people whose lives are bound together by a time and place and memories we all hold dear. It is yet another affirmation that the human connection endures and even deepens with the passage of time.
