Tonight I accomplished something that Ive been dreaming about for decades: I finished reading The Hobbit to my son, Coleman, age 5. My father first read The Hobbit to me when I was five, and that was one of the single most important events of my childhood. Pops instilled in me a love of reading, imagination, and adventure that has stuck with me to this day. J.R.R. Tolkien, more than any other author, was seminal in the development of my worldview and has been a constant companion over the intervening decades. It was one of the greatest honors of my life to pass this tradition onto my son. I am confident that he will grow up to be a reader, a dreamer, and a profound thinker. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. ~Thorin Oakenshield.
