Tonight I experienced something in the woods that I never really did before... at least not to this extent. As I was walking through thick laurel on an old trail, I heard a crash in front of me so I stopped. Then the crashing came right to me and out stepped a mother black bear just 10 feet away. Just before I turned and laid on the ground I noticed her cubs up a tree to my other side. As I reached for the pistol in my pocket, I was praying that the climber on my back would protect me in case she decided to come closer. Eventually she lost interest, backed off, and her cubs came down out of the tree. After what seemed like forever I was able to get up and walk away. It was a cool experience, but I am not afraid to admit that I was scared as hell while all of it was going on.
