Tonight, I got to see Theatre Complicite in collaboration with the Setagaya Public Theatre, with a piece "inspired by provocative writings—the short story “A Portrait of Shun-kin” and the essay “In Praise of Shadows”—penned by one of the foremost writers in Japanese literature, Jun’ichiro Tanizaki. The tale elegantly reconstructs a love story—and its darker, sadomasochistic undercurrents—between a blind musician and her servant lover in 19th-century Japan." Narrative prosthesis Japanese-style, food more for my brain than for my bodymindheart. Interesting! Very glad to go see performance with Anita Gonzalez and Emily Wilcox, new UM colleagues.
