Tonight I heard a very sobering presentation from Duane Goossen, former Kansas budget director. Because of state revenue shortfalls-- caused mostly by the Governors misguided tax policies-- the incoming Kansas legislature will likely need to make at least $300 million in cuts in the current fiscal year budget just to break even by June 30 (the end of the current fiscal year). Thats about 5% of the $6.3 billion budget-- or 10% of the budget for the second half of the year. And that doesnt take into account the $500 million or so that should be in the reserve fund. If elected, I will be seeking your feedback on how to deal with these devastating budget cuts.
