Tonight I heard about Boys II Men performing this weekend at a football game and it brought me to youtube going through all of their different videos. I loved Boys II Men growing up and still do. This got me to think about how my generation was lucky enough to have exposure to another race and it not even be an issue, at least not how/where I was raised. I grew up with In Living Color, Boys II Men, TLC, Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Colin Powell, Shaq, Jordan, Brandy, Whoopi Goldberg even Urkel. It was never an issue for me to watch or listen to shows with people from another race. I had friends of all races and it wasnt until I was older and learned about racism that I could even fathom separate schools based on race. Im sure a lot of that is how I was raised but I hope its also a sign of progress of society. My generation was the first to have the ability to vote for someone of a different race for president in the general election and then to see them elected. Regardless of political opinions seeing progress and barriers broken down is something Im glad to have happen during my generation. It makes me wonder what my kids will grow up thinking is the norm and being able to tell them stories about what it was like for me growing up. Much like my Moms stories of segregation and when schools were first mixed. Honestly, this isnt meant to drum up any political opinions about anything, its just that I have so many memories that wouldnt have been possible if race had been an issue growing up. And Ill leave you with a classic Boys II Men song while I go look up All-4-One.
