Tonight I saw a very, very good film....’The Theory of Everything’ about the life of Stephen Hawking. Hawking is played by British actor Eddie Redmayne and after a while it seems like a documentary. In 1963 Hawking was diagnosed with ALS (or Lou Gehrigs Disease) while studying at Cambridge and given two years to live. Amazingly, he is alive today at the age of 72. This terrific film documents his life and his incredible achievements. He’s a theoretical physicist; cosmologist; (I haven’t a clue what any of that means – I got it from Wikipedia); author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at Cambridge. Watching his lifelong battle with ALS along with the heroic efforts of his wife (sadly they’re divorced - but friends), family and friends - sure puts our problems in the background for a little while.
